We have a particularly busy company and commercial department, supported by our Business Unit, covering all aspects of corporate matters. We advise on local company formation, local representation for foreign companies, restructuring and mergers and acquisitions in both Iraq and Jordan. Our clients have ranged from foreign multi-nationals to sole practice businesses. We can also advise on franchise possibilities in Iraq and Jordan as well as insolvency and dissolutions. We have also worked closely with financial institutions in connection with the winding up of companies and, on several occasions, represented the Central Bank of Iraq, Rafidain Bank and the Central Bank of Jordan in bank liquidations.
We have always had a thriving commercial practice covering all aspects of commercial law and business. The bulk of our work involves consultancy and drafting agreements in areas as diverse as asset sales, insurance, taxation and franchising. In the past we have acted for Iraqi representatives of foreign multinationals, local businesses, foreign companies setting up directly in Iraq as well as financial institutions. In recent years, we have undertaken a substantial amount of work on contracts under the Oil for Food Programme (worth in the region of US$ 100 million). We have also been very active in drafting contracts under the Iraqi-Jordanian Protocol as well as drafting several bilateral agreements between Iraq and other states.
In recognition of the importance of providing a
comprehensive service to our clients, whether Iraqi, Jordanian or foreign,
we have set up a dedicated Business Unit which undertakes a proportion of
our commercial work whilst giving our clients advice on business
opportunities inside and outside Iraq, highlighting the pitfalls and
providing solutions to any problems they may encounter.
